Common questions about laser vision correction

Group Health Eye Care offers very limited LASIK surgery (laser-assisted in situ keratomilieusis). If you are interested in laser vision correction, please talk with your Group Health optometrist about whether LASIK might be right for you.

What is LASIK?

LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomilieusis) is a popular surgical alternative to glasses or contacts. Using a precise excimer laser, an experienced and licensed LASIK surgeon permanently reshapes your corneas in an outpatient procedure that allows you to resume normal activity in two to three days.

Is it painful?

There should be no pain during the procedure. There is usually no pain after the procedure, but some people experience a mild irritation for a few days.

How much does Laser Vision Correction (LVC) cost?

Fees for laser vision correction range between $600-$2,500 per eye depending on complexity of correction and technology required for best outcome.

Is this covered by insurance?

No. The insurance industry views this as an elective procedure and not medically necessary.

Will I have 20/20 vision after LVC?

Very high percentages of people develop 20/25 vision or better after LVC. However, if it is your expectation to have perfect vision or to never need glasses again, LVC may not be for you. Most people over the age of 45 will still need reading glasses after the procedure.

Is LVC safe?

Yes, we consider the surgery very safe but we also want you to take the procedure seriously. All surgeries have potential risks and complications. About 10% of patients will require a follow-up procedure called an enhancement, to correct residual refractive error.

How long will I need to be off work?

Most people return to work in 3-4 days.

Does the surgery require stitches or shots?

No. Drops are inserted in the eye before the procedure to numb the eye. No stitches are needed.

Is it an outpatient procedure?

Yes. You will spend about an hour at the laser center, but the actual procedure takes 10-15 minutes.

What is the age limit for LVC?

You should be 21 years old with a stable prescription. There is no upper age limit.
